چکیده

Template-based Tolerant Algebraic Side Channel Attacks (Template-TASCA) were suggested by Wool et al. in 2012. as a way of reducing the high data complexity of template attacks by coupling them with algebraic side-channel attacks. In contrast to the maximum-likelihood method used in a standard template attack, the templatealgebraic attack method uses a constraint solver to find the optimal state correlated to the measured side-channel leakage. In this work we present a practical application of the template-algebraic key recovery attack to a publicly available data set (IAIK WS2). We show how our attack can successfully recover the encryption key even when the attacker has extremely limited access to the device under test – only 200 traces in the offline phase and as little as a single trace in the online phase. However, to use such solvers the cipher must be represented at bit-level. For byte-oriented ciphers this produces very large and unwieldy instances, leading to unpredictable, and often very long, run times. In this work we describe a specialized byte-oriented constraint solver for side channel cryptanalysis. The user only needs to supply code snippets for the native operations of the cipher, arranged in a flow graph that models the dependence between the side channel leaks. Our framework uses a soft decision mechanism which overcomes realistic measurement noise and decoder classification errors, through a novel method for reconciling multiple probability distributions. On the DPA v4 contest dataset our framework is able to extract the correct key from one or two power traces in under 9 seconds with a success rate of over 79%.

An efficient secure channel coding scheme based on polar codes

In this paper, we propose a new framework for joint encryption encoding scheme based on polar codes, namely efficient and secure joint secret key encryption channel coding scheme. The issue of using new coding structure, i.e. polar codes in Rao-Nam (RN) like schemes is addressed. Cryptanalysis methods show that the proposed scheme has an acceptable level of security with a relatively smaller ke...

Models and algorithms for physical cryptanalysis

This thesis is dedicated to models and algorithms for the use in physical cryptanalysis which is a new evolving discipline in implementation security of information systems. It is based on physically observable and manipulable properties of a cryptographic implementation. Physical observables, such as the power consumption or electromagnetic emanation of a cryptographic device are so-called ‘si...

Side channel cryptanalysis

Cryptology includes cryptography and cryptanalysis technics. Cryptography is managed by Kerckhoffs principles, so any information related to a cryptosystem can be public except the keys. The cryptanalysis is the sum of a lot of very advanced technics in order to find these keys. The controversy about the Data Encryption Standard security has highly contributed to the development of new cryptana...

A new method for accelerating impossible differential cryptanalysis and its application on LBlock

Impossible differential cryptanalysis, the extension of differential cryptanalysis, is one of the most efficient attacks against block ciphers. This cryptanalysis method has been applied to most of the block ciphers and has shown significant results. Using structures, key schedule considerations, early abort, and pre-computation are some common methods to reduce complexities of this attack. In ...

Two New Techniques of Side-Channel Cryptanalysis

We describe two new techniques of side-channel cryptanalysis which we call the impossible collision attack and the multiset collision attack. These are inspired by the state-of-the-art cryptanalytic techniques of impossible differential attacks [BBS99] and partial-function collision attacks [GM00] respectively. Using these techniques on an example of the AES we show that one has to mask all the...

Hidden Markov Model Cryptanalysis

We present HMM attacks, a new type of cryptanalysis based on modeling randomized side channel countermeasures as Hidden Markov Models (HMM’s). We also introduce Input Driven Hidden Markov Models (IDHMM’s), a generalization of HMM’s that provides a powerful and unified cryptanalytic framework for analyzing countermeasures whose operational behavior can be modeled by a probabilistic finite state ...
